Consultant and Specialist in Sports and Exercise Medicine

Danica Bonello Spiteri

Danica Bonello Spiteri is a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine with extensive expertise in exercise prescription for weight management, metabolic health, and long-term lifestyle change. With a medical degree, MRCP (UK), specialist training in Sports & Exercise Medicine, and postgraduate qualifications in sports medicine and biomechanics, she brings an evidence-based, medically supervised approach to weight loss programmes.

Her clinical work integrates metabolic risk assessment, musculoskeletal screening, biomechanics, and cardiorespiratory fitness testing to design safe, individualised exercise programmes for people with overweight, obesity, and obesity-related conditions. This includes adapting exercise for individuals with joint pain, previous injury, chronic disease, low fitness levels, or a history of repeated failed weight-loss attempts.

Drawing on experience from hospital medicine, general practice, and elite sport, she applies structured training principles—progression, load management, recovery, and behaviour change—to non-athletic populations, ensuring programmes are both effective and sustainable. Her approach combines aerobic training, resistance exercise, movement quality, and lifestyle physical activity, with close monitoring to reduce injury risk and improve adherence.

As an academic lecturer and published author in exercise prescription and sports medicine, and as a clinician working with both recreational and elite athletes, she bridges the gap between medical safety and performance-based training. Her work emphasises exercise as a therapeutic intervention for fat loss, cardiometabolic health, musculoskeletal resilience, and long-term wellbeing rather than short-term weight reduction alone.
